British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
